      The Duck Pond

The sheltered estuary lagoon where most people learn.

The Duck Pond is the shallow lagoon on the estuary side of the dunes, and it is where most people in Exmouth learn to kite and wing. At the right state of tide it is waist deep, flat and sheltered, which is exactly what you want when you are learning to body drag, water start or get up on a foil.

It works best on a north-westerly, when the wind funnels down the river from Exeter and cleans up as it comes down the estuary. Plan around the tide: it only works on the top of the tide, so aim to arrive around three hours before high water and you will get a solid session. Arrive at low water and you will be looking at sand.

It is a shared space with walkers, dog owners and the birds that give it its name, so keep launches tidy and kites low over the beach.
