Dawlish Warren
The sand spit across the estuary mouth: big beach, sea breeze, room to run.
Dawlish Warren is the sand spit on the far side of the estuary mouth, directly across the water from Exmouth. It is a long, open beach with the sea on one side and the estuary on the other, so there is plenty of room to run and a choice of flat or wave depending on which side you launch.
It is also the finish line for the classic Exmouth downwinder: launch at the seafront on a south-easterly, ride the sandbank across the mouth and land on the Warren. Only do that with a plan for getting back, and never on an ebbing tide without local knowledge.
This is a nature reserve with nesting birds at the tip, so respect the marked areas and keep off the point in the breeding season.
Watch it: Dawlish Warren: paddle, swim, run.
