Patagonia grew out of a climbing-hardware business that Yvon Chouinard ran from a tin shed in Ventura, California. The clothing company took its name in 1973, and from early on it treated the environment as a stakeholder: co-founding 1% for the Planet, pioneering recycled and organic fabrics, and running the Worn Wear programme so garments get repaired instead of replaced. In 2022 the family transferred ownership to a trust and a non-profit, so the company's profits now fund climate work.

For us the appeal is simple. Patagonia wetsuits, made with natural rubber instead of neoprene, are warm and hold their shape season after season, and the layers and jackets are what our team reaches for between sessions on a cold seafront.
